As a LinkedIn advocate, I am often asked by people if they need to use LinkedIn Premium.
Need is a strong word, and the real answer depends on what you are looking to accomplish through LinkedIn.
Free or Premium LinkedIn?
It’s no secret that LinkedIn is one of the most powerful business tools available, and you can certainly leverage that power with a free profile (and a free company page).
In my experience, the biggest advantage in using LinkedIn Premium is that it allows you to connect directly to other professionals without waiting for them to accept your request to connect.
They say “time is money” and I love saving time, so I find immense value in that.
I have personally used LinkedIn to network with countless professionals, generate targeted leads, and build a reputation as a trusted professional.
I almost felt guilty not paying for LinkedIn, given how successful I have been with it.
My LinkedIn Upgrade Experience
I chose to upgrade once in the past to test the system out, and I later dropped the Premium service (and I don’t recall why).
I later upgraded and I now use it as a way of reminding myself to make new connections with high profile users.
I get three “InMails” per month, which is a way of sending a direct message to another professional without having an established LinkedIn relationship.
The better news is that if the person doesn’t respond, I don’t lose the credit so I am guaranteed to make 3 new strong connections per month that I might not have made using the free version of LinkedIn.
My advice when it comes to marketing is “test everything,” so I say test out the Premium version of LinkedIn and see how you like it.
And when you do, make sure you actually use the features so you can give it a fair assessment.
